Clay Coral – Lino – Printing

This beautiful unit was based upon the development of an installation needed for a performance at school. The installation, to be solid, rough yet fragile, was to represent a natural inhabited space. We took a look at a few artists, and one in particular stuck out as inspiration for this project.

After two weeks of introduction to clay pots and clay manipulation, the students investigated how to create a space with clay that represents and underwater surface. Each piece individually made yet to fit together as a whole. After creating the coral pieces, students designed some flatter, more detailed pieces that may represent flower or seashell like surfaces. First the designs were cut out of linocut surfaces, and then printed into the clay to create the flat coral surfaces. The linocuts were also then used for printing, and printed onto handmade paper to create an antique and natural look.

What began as an exploration into underwater coral, ended in a beautiful group made installation, followed by prints and relief surfaces used for decoration of the performance space.
