Self-Portrait Photography Paintings

The idea behind this project is simple and easy.

First, students were introduced to the idea of a ‘self portrait’ by looking at a series of photography portraits, generally in black and white, and considering the idea of ‘perspective’. Perspective in this unit refers to the overall idea – ‘the way we perceive ourselves and the world around us’

After this, they took their own portraits, transposed into black and white, and manipulated them slightly using Photoshop. These photos were then packaged and sent to a printer to print large scale onto a canvas.

While being printed, the students printed small copies of their photographs onto plain paper, and experimented expressions of color on the photograph, considering the paint as being the added element of expression that would bring the black and white photograph to life. Here is an example of the three step process.

They made small studies of what they would do to their final portrait. They could use any painting technique, but were limited to only acrylic paint, as it’s the only paint that would adhere to the surface of the print well enough.

This is some of the results.
